Unofficial FAQ on IIT Bhubaneswar
(The information on this page has been obtained by discussion with some IIT Kharagpur officials.
However, this is an unofficial FAQ and one should double check with IIT Kharagpur
authorities.)
General Information
- Where is the proposed IIT going to be located?
Government of Orissa has identified a land measuring
1000 acres near Bhubaneswar.
- How long will it take for the new campus to be established
and where will the Institute function from till then?
It is expected to be completed in about four years' time. However,
parts of the campus including class rooms, hostels and administrative
buildings will be ready, hopefully in two years time. This year the classes
for the students admitted to IIT Bhubaneswar will be held in IIT Kharagpur.
Next year, it may function from a suitable location in Bhubaneswar.
(IIT Kharagpur's extension center in Bhubaneswar and College of Engineering and Technology in Bhubaneswar are
two possible locations.)
Academics
- IIT Bhubaneswar is being mentored by IIT Kharagpur.
What is meant by mentoring? In what way IIT
Kharagpur is associated with IIT Bhubaneswar?
Each of the new IITs that are being established is to be
mentored by an existing IIT. This implies that IIT Kharagpur,
in the initial years will be responsible for setting up
the Institute's infrastructure, hiring of faculty and
ensuring that the quality of instruction imparted to the
students is of international standard. The curriculum for
IIT-Kharagpur will be very similar to that of IIT Bhubaneswar. The
Institute will follow the grading pattern and other rules
(e.g. branch change rule) similar to that of IIT Kharagpur.
- Who will teach the IIT Bhubaneswar students?
In the first year IIT Kharagpur faculty will be teaching
the classes of IIT Bhubaneswar students. These students will be treated
as another section (or two) of the incoming batch.
- What about laboratories?
IIT Kharagpur's laboratory will be used in the first year.
- Will there be a library?
IIT Bhubaneswar students will have access to IIT Kharagpur's library.
- What branches will be offered at IIT Bhubaneswar?
IIT Bhubaneswar will offer 40 seats each in three branches: Civil Engineering (E09), Electrical Engineering (E11), Mechanical Engineering (E24)
- Why Civil Engineering and not Computer Science as offered by 4 of the 5 other new IITs?
A conscious decision has been made to offer civil engineering this year. (In the near future Computer science will be offered.) If you watch TV you would know how much behind our country is with respect to most countries in the world in terms of infrastructure such as roads, highways, cities, towns, buildings, bridges, flyovers, etc. To catch up our country is going through a tremendous infrastructure building and we desperately need good civil engineers to help and lead this effort. Hence perhaps the conscious decision to offer civil engineering at IIT Bhubaneswar.
Also from the very beginning IIT Bhubanaeswar wants to set itself apart and rather then succumb to the "me too" mentality, it wants to be a leader in developing technologists and engineers that will build India.
Living
- What about hostel facilities?
IIT Bhubaneswar students will be staying with the IIT Kharagpur students in
the Halls of residences. Most likely, the boys will be staying in the MMM Hall of residences.
- Is there accommodation for girl students?
The girls will be staying in the SN Hall or the MT Hall.
- What will be the living expenditure?
The expenditure will be similar to that of the students of IIT Kharagpur.
- Has any arrangement been made for health care of students?
IIT Bhubaneswar students will use the health care facilities currently in place at IIT
Kharagpur.
- I need more information.
